Error-free labeling on cans with In-Sight
Cognex Corporation (systems and products for machine vision and barcode reading) has provided the US system integrator Matrix Technologies, specialized in the engineering of automated production lines, with the In-Sight vision system for perfecting the process of labeling bright or reflective containers in the food and beverage industry.
New approach to inspection. Taking advantage of recent advances in vision system technology, Matrix Technologies has developed a specific approach to automatic inspection of luminous fields and reflective areas, developing a Brightfield Microscopy Inspection Solution (so called because light or reflective metal can create a bright background that makes characters difficult to read), based on vision system that reads the product code comprising the characters printed on the package and matches it to the Universal Product Code (UPC) barcode on the label.
A reminder that labeling lines operate on hundreds of thousands of cans at an average speed of 1,000 pieces per minute, so the challenge is to find the incorrectly labeled can amidst the onrush; the manufacturer is held responsible for the incorrect labeling of a product.
The solution lies in the Cognex In-Sight vision system, capable of inspecting product codes on the bright reflective background of cans at a rate of 1,000 products per minute.
Rather than reading individual characters, the application is configured to search for an image that matches the product code. In this sense, the Cognex “pattern matching” tool named PatMax is simpler, more rugged and more efficient as well as more economical compared to other systems.
