The industry at the time of Ipack-Ima 2015
The signs revealed in the second half of 2014 showing a good run of the packaging and food processing sector are consolidating: the first months of 2015 have in fact seen a reinforcement of the growth dynamic across the entire sector (suppliers of technology, materials and services associated with activities of processing and packaging food and other products, and the users of these products and services).
Hence bolstered by positive readings and expectations, the Italian operators of the packaging and processing materials and machine segment are about to give rise to the 2015 edition of Ipack Ima (Fiera Milano, Rho, 19th-23rd May): an exhaustive show in terms of format and contents, in virtue of its simultaneous running with the vertical shows Dairy Tech and Meat Tech, with Converflex, Intralogistica Italia and Fruit Innovation.
To those who have chosen to show technology and skills live for the occasion, we asked them for the reasons behind their choice.
But we also asked them to more broadly reflect on the moment in time which we are experiencing, aiming at sharing an approach to entrepreneurship that, given the results of the most recent studies, still seems to be positive. Nine months on from the last survey launched by ItaliaImballaggio (where around 170 companies took part), we hence decided to repropose a “collective” reflection by way of a survey online focussed on “The industry at the time of Ipack-Ima”: on this occasion some 600 enquiries resulted in the returning of over 110 responses.
We thank all those who took part in the undertaking, with which we wished to offer an updated scenario of the market and the general feelings as to the same.
Once again we focused on the value of the tradition of Italian manufacturing, the good and concrete business administration, the contribution that research and technology offer for the success of a product, without obviously overlooking what it means to live and operate in a global market.
Food for thought, posed in the form of questions
With the aim of facilitating the reading of this article, we have summarized the trends expressed by the operators. As a complement, we propose a series of charts with aggregate data based on the answers and the technological information that were sent in to us to round off the survey “The Industry at the time of Ipack-Ima 2015 by ItaliaImballaggio”.
The value of a fair
What does it mean to participate today in a fair like Ipack-Ima? (Multiple responses)
• Testify ones own vitality to the market (the important thing is being there) • Introduce new products • Consolidate existing relations • Acquire new customers • Contact distributors • Monitor the technological development of the sector • Other (specify)
Out of 106 responses received, while 84 refer to Ipack-Ima as an ideal place for meeting potential users, 67 consider it an important time to reconnect with established contacts. That’s also why 72% of respondents consider attendance indispensable, presenting new solutions (67.92%). Among the comments submitted, what stands out is an intention to take advantage of the event in order to “study the competition”, but also to note recent important changes to companies (which might now have direct Italian subsidiaries rather than distributors, for instance).
Doing business today: after the crisis...
What has the recent crisis bequeathed to the Italian industrial system, and in particular to our segment? (Multiple responses)
• A different corporate culture • A better organization of activities • Increased awareness of the value of R&D • The conviction of having the ability to react to problems with pragmatism • The conscience of the value of the technology and the role of trend setter in an increasingly broad competitive scenario • A feeling of marginalisation compared to the globalised world • The difficulty of giving rise to a management model with“low fixed costs” that is flexible and reactive • Being hampered by a labour market that is all too rigid • The importance of having adequate social shock absorbers.
The value of research proves a driving factor for 64.71% of respondents, tied up with a conviction that they have managed, during these troubled years, to rationalize as best as possible the concern’s management (54.90%). The Italians, furthermore, continue to consider themselves protagonists of the global market, although certain comments submitted explicitly refer to the need to have a “national system allied with business, one that facilitates rather than impedes business».
Another “legacy” of the crisis is a certain difficulty in planning for the medium-long term.
Doing business today: strategies for the future
What strategies have you fielded to win the globalization game? (Multiple responses)
• Organizational redesign • Optimization of manufacturing activities - Relocation of manufacturing • Manufacturing and commercial partnerships • Company network contracts • Growth in size by external means (buy-ups) • Internal growth • Focus on the quality and certification of products and services • Focus on new products • Focus on high-performance products • Focus on standard products • Expansion of the offer • Revision of the sales network policies (external and internal) • Other (specify)
The sample we interviewed has expressed one certainty in particular: the Italians have no intention of moving their production abroad. However, they also appear reluctant to implement business networks or develop via external channels. Promising, on the other hand, is the data on revision of commercial networks (41.41%). But it’s the search for quality products (preferably new ones) and services that fleshes out these concerns’ expanding offer, before it can be distributed through targeted marketing campaigns.
The market: initial results and forecasts
2014 balance sheet and forecasts
• Did 2014’s turnover beat 2013? • Have your profit margins improved? • Currently is your order book fuller compared to the same period in 2014? • Are exports in 2014 more lively than domestic demand? • Could Expo Milano act as a growth driver for your business? • Do you expect a growth in turnover in 2015? • Will the falling euro lead to a higher share of exports in 2015? • Will your level of employment increase in 2015?
Perceptions are positive in terms of various indicators: not only has 2014 turnover grown for 84.78% of interviewees, but approximately 87% of them expect theirs to grow even more in 2015, benefitting in part from the devaluation of the euro (69.77%).
Also confirmed is an export dynamic performing leaps and bounds better than domestic demand. Only 58.89% of respondents perceive the EXPO as a growth driver (90 answered this question). For the current year, approximately 65% of operators see no chance of growing employment.
The competition
Finally, the ritual question: what do you have to offer over and above your international competitors? (Multiple responses)
• The brand value • The “typical” nature of interpersonal relations • the strength of leading edge technological knowhow • A cost-effective quality/price ratio • A high capacity to customize the offer • A superior level of post sales service • Other (specify)
The Italians continue to be “masters” of personalization according to approximately 80% of operators participating in the survey, which also boast cutting edge technical knowledge: these are added value characteristics that continue to make the difference on the international market. Attention to post-sales service (62.5%) and brand value remain the best cards up Italian concerns’ sleeves.
