Cable entry systems “à la carte”

Murrplastik Systemtechnik (Oppenweiler, D) offers a wide range of cable entry systems that help save more than 100% on installation and disassembly of wiring.

Time for installation counts: it’s one of the most important criteria for most buyers and production managers in deciding whether or not to use a cable entry system. But what about disassembly time? A test developed by Murrplastik Systemtechnik, Oppenweiler, demonstrates that, in practice, disassembly requires more than 65% more time than installation. Until now, this factor has been little considered in processing and acquisitions departments.

The whole range of cable entry systems
Murrplastik Systemtechnik has established itself as one of the cable entry system sector’s go-to full service specialists (1).
Faithful to the motto “We listen, We think, We do”, Murrplastik has, over the last 20 years, developed a catalog of multi cable entry systems for the industrial environment that stands up to any comparison in terms of variety and practical application. Today, the technicians in Oppenweiler offer a vast, diversified range of innovative cable entry system and cable support systems, flexible drag chains and cable entry and holding systems, including cable fixers, shearing tools and accessories.

The first criterion is industrial practice
Extremely fast installation and disassembly, less bulk and greater efficiency.
The declared objective of Murrplastik’s technicians was not to improve individual functions, but overall functionality.
Michael Braun, Product Manager at Murrplastik Systemtechnik, specifies: «Of what use to the customer is quick installation, if time will then be lost installing a missing cable entry or gasket? The whole packet must be up to the task».
It is also important that most Murrplastik cable entry systems can be installed without the need of tools. In compliance with industry requirements, most Murrplastik cable entry systems feature snap plug-in, are listed in UR and CSA, offer high seal of at least IP 54, or are suited for CEM applications. Moreover, their high compactness enables saving approximately 50% in space, so that multiple cables or tubes can be laid in the same space.
The fields of application of Murrplastik cable entry systems include command stations, electric cabinets and the sectors of industrial machinery and mechanical engineering (2).

For cables and pneumatic tubing
KDP/N, KDP/R, KDP/Metall systems.
For laying cables and pneumatic tubing without plugs, Murrplastik has developed the KDP (rectangular) and KDP/R (round) systems. For laying a cable or flexible tube, it is necessary to insert it into the hole with the corresponding diameter. After insertion, a quick tug sets the cable. Even in case of blockage, the KDP series features a high class of protection (IP 65). Murrplastik offers KDP in versions for cables and flexible tubing with various diameters - including in stainless steel and aluminium or as a complete bus housing from synthetic material with transparent cover (3).

Never cut plugs again
KDL/E smart cable entry system for assembled cables.
For setting up cables assembled with plugs, for example those of printers, sensors or for data transmission, Murrplastik has developed a smart solution: the KDL/E cable entry system.
The advantage: the plugs don’t need to be disassembled.
All it takes is to close the divisible cable entry system element around the cable and insert it into the panel. This is all placed in the adapted opening of the holding system. And it’s done!
Installation and disassembly of a KDL/E equipped with the maximum 20 cables even proves very simple: with just a couple of maneuvers the KDL/E is set in the opening thanks to a special snap system with no screws.
The cables are set in the individual cable entry system elements. The KDL/E can be equipped with assembled cables with diameters between 3 and 31 mm.

Why double (when just one is all it takes)?
KDP-Multi for pneumatic tubes and assembled cables.
With KDP-Multi, Murrplastik has added a new cable entry system to its range that combines two functions. For example, it is now possible to assemble wires, pneumatic tubing and cables with the same cable entry system. The KDP-Multi is offered in six versions for cables with diameters up to 16 mm and for 10... 21 cable entry systems.

A test
We report the results of a test made to register the time of installation and dismantling of the Murrplastik Systemtechnik KDL/E system compared to a competing product.
Results
• Time required for the installation of the KDL/E 4min 15s (255s)
• Time required for the installation of the competing product 6min 30s (390s)
• Time required for the disassembly of the KDL/E system 1min 15s (75s)
• Time required for the disassembly of the competing product 4min 30s (270s)
• Total time required for the installation and the disassembly of the KDL/E system = 4min 15s (255s)
• Total time required for the installation and the disassembly of the competing product  = 660 seconds.

Arrangement for the execution of the test
• The 24-pole opening, including through holes, had already been created
• The strips (10 grommets) were to be equipped with 6 grommets including cables and 4 blind elements
• Strips, grommets, mounting materials and tools were made available
• The person responsible for carrying out the test was a design-engineer who did not know the product, in a neutral standpoint and with a technical background.
• The installation of the two systems was explained in advance only once.
• The times were recorded separately for the installation and disassembly of the two systems
• The disassembly had to restore the initial situation, ie the cable grommets had to be removed from the cable.

A history of cable entry systems
Among the pioneers in this field, Murrplastik has contributed to determining the developments in this sector over the last 20 years. With the KDL series of products, Murrplastik was one of the first suppliers to present, in the early ‘90s, divisible cable entry system panels. For the first time it was possible to install predetermined cables without cutting the plug. With KDP, the concern presented a cable entry system panel integrating both the gasket and jack. With the KDP Multi, pneumatic tubing and electrical wiring can be inserted without plugs.

Who is Murrplastik Systemtechnik GmbH
Since its founding in 1976, Murrplastik Systemtechnik GmbH has been a pioneer in the field of high-tech synthetic material products. In 1984 the first openable drag chain was patented in Oppenweiler. In 1986, Murrplastik Systemtechnik developed the first computer-assisted labeling system for individual wires, latches and command devices. In 1993, Murrplastik presented its first cable entry system.
The German technicians’ latest innovation has met with worldwide success: the first magnetic drag chain. For the first time it is possible to create transfer pathways without contract between the top and bottom of the chain, thus eliminating wear and friction.
As of today, Murrplastik Systemtechnik GmbH holds more than 100 patents. This was made possible by a culture of innovation deeply rooted within the concern, from the interns to the research and development department. Gaining advantages over the competition by means of innovation is one of the pillars of Murrplastik Systemtechnik.
Murrplastik products are distributed by affiliates operating in France, Italy, Switzerland, Spain, the USA and China, as well as through representatives in Europe, North America, South America, Africa, Australia and Asia.
