Production and filling of a roll-on
World-class manufacturer, Ronchi Mario SpA is the undisputed leader in the packaging of liquid products for the cosmetics, pharmaceutical, chemical and food industries. Among the areas of excellence of the company, the filling and capping roll-on deodorants.
The roll-on is one type of packaging in strong development, which owes its success to its intrinsic characteristics: pocketable, economic, easy to use, provides a perfect and steady dose.
Inseparable companion of gym enthusiasts, that always carry it with them in the sports bag, and trusted ally of women, who can take it with them in even the most trendy of pochettes, roll-on it effectively meets an increasingly rooted need for wellbeing, supported what is more by scientific data on the use of deoderants. This is the case, for example, the studies conducted by the University of Warwick (England), which demonstrate that the use of deodorants ensures 18 times less bacteria in the armpits. And that, regardless of the myriad of scents and the shapes in commerce (stick, spray, with vaporizer or in cream). Use deodorant is therefore, in general terms, a good habit, but it's all about choosing the form most suitable to your personal needs.
How a roll-on deodorant come into being. Thanks to technological solutions adopted, the company Ronchi Mario SpA is one of the few manufacturers in the world to make "high reliability" roll-on deoderants”. The pack is made starting with the moulding of a container, then filled to size and to which a ring is applied, in which is inserted a ball (or sphere). Last comes the cap or stopper, a particularly difficult step.
Filling accuracy is guaranteed by the use of flow meters technology, of which RONCHI was the first true pioneer, and which has now become standard on all filling machines manufactured by Ronchi.
The flow-meters - both of the electromagnetic inductive and mass type - besides guaranteeing extremely accurate measurements, do not require any maintenance due to the fact that these instruments have no moving parts. Dosing operations are controlled through a PLC installed aboard the filling turret. Once the measurement if reached, the PLC system controls the closing of the filling valve.
Once filled the container goes on to the subsequent stage.
The ring is applied by a capping turret, while a second turret positions the ball. The pick-up of the ring first, and of the ball thereafter, is performed by the respective chucks operating through a positive system with grippers, thus ensuring perfect control and highly accurate placing of the ring onto the neck of the container, and of the ball into the ring.
One then goes onto the posing of the cap: at this point the high tech capping machines typical of Ronchi comes into its own, thanks to the capping heads equipped with brushless motors, which ensure utmost flexibility.
Furthermore, thanks to a simple and rapid change-over system of the chucks, they can easily be adapted to any sort of application (press-on caps, screw-on caps, caps to be oriented etc). The Ronchi cappers are equipped with a quality control system that detects the applied torque and displays the reached value on the operator’s panel.
The imperfectly capped or filled bottles are automatically rejected and diverted onto an ejecting conveyors running parallel to the transfer conveyors, while the properly filled and capped bottles are conveyed to the labeler and to the case packer and, from here, to the shelves of supermarkets, and finally to our homes.
CURIOSITY. The roll-on deodorant was invented in the late 40’s in the United States; the intuition came to Helen Barnett Diserens, director of Brystol Myers Cosmetics Division while observing an invention which, at that time, was revolutionizing handwriting: the ballpoint pen, wherein the ink flew down perfectly dosed while rolling on a ball. |
