Sanpellegrino aims to use at least 50% recycled PET in its packaging by 2025
A leader in the Italian mineral water and soft drinks sector, Sanpellegrino is well on course to achieve the environmental targets set out in its latest Sustainability Report 2021 concerning the efficiency of production systems, logistics and the use of sustainable packaging.
The Group already uses 100% recyclable materials for its packaging (plastic, glass and aluminium) and is increasing the percentage of recycled plastic used in its bottles with the aim of reaching an average of at least 50% recycled PET by 2025. To achieve this target, Sanpellegrino is working to develop new materials, processes and technologies that combine product functionality and safety with reduced environmental impact. A pioneer in the field, the company has long been committed to lighter packaging and was the first in Italy to make bottles from 100% recycled plastic. Looking ahead to 2030, it has set itself an even more ambitious goal: to recycle as many bottles as it produces.
As part of its efforts to optimise its industrial processes, in 2020 the Group reduced its energy consumption by 6% compared to the previous year and its waste production by 13%, while its industrial water consumption fell to 1.1 litres per litre of bottled natural mineral water. As part of its sustainable logistics plans, 45% of water is now transported using environmentally friendly methods such as rail or LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) powered vehicles.
Last year Sanpellegrino created €2.5 billion of shared value in the supply chain in Italy, equivalent to 2.8 times its sales revenue (€893 million) and 0.15% of the country’s GDP. The company has more than 1,400 employees, with 44% of top management positions held by women. It is on course to achieve carbon neutrality across its entire product portfolio by 2025..
