A four-legged robot on patrol in the Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park in Singapore
In a trial that began on 8 May in the Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park in Singapore, a dog-like robot assistant called Spot is helping the country’s police enforce social distancing rules by playing a recorded message.
Developed by Boston Dynamics, the robot is equipped with numerous sensors and video cameras that enable it to observe the surroundings and estimate the number of people present in a given location, although it will be unable to track or recognise individuals and will not collect personal data.
Spot can negotiate obstacles more effectively than wheeled robots, making it ideal for use on mixed terrain, and the Singapore government is now considering whether to extend the project to other parks. Signs at the park entrance ask visitors not to disturb Spot while he is working.
