Best Packaging 2017: the finalists

Anniversary number 60 for the Italian Packaging Oscar. The finalists of the contest and the initiatives scheduled during the Milan Fuorisalone, fielded by the Istituto Italiano Imballaggio to promote creativity and scientific knowledge of an industry that is top internationally.

To celebrate the 60 years of the Italian Packaging Oscar, the contest organized by the Istituto Italiano Imballaggio that awards the Best Packaging, the eclectic artist Roxy in the Box will create three original works, drawn from a reflection that came to her in 2004 with the Kitakkat show, featuring important historical national brand logos.
During the Milan Design Week, there will hence be an encounter on the theme of reality and the artistic transfiguration of packaging, created to preserve, protect and communicate, that has become a cult object for pop art. Showcased by Barbara Frigerio Contemporary Art, in the heart of the Brera Design District, innovation in design, materials and functions of packaging that accompanies everyday life meet up with the reinterpretations of the Neapolitan pop artist, who reads packaging as a powerful communication tool and popular form of artistic education and dissemination. The place of origin is the supermarket, which is perceived by Roxy as a place of repeatability, the place par excellence which combines some of the most significant themes in her artistic approach and style: pop art, the logo, packaging.

Alongside the finalists of the Oscar of the packaging, the works of Roxy in the Box will be on display 4 to 9 April, from 16.30 to 20.30, in via dell’Orso 12, Milan. The occasion will also be accompanied by the street food of Chef Fabrizio Sansoni and the cocktails of mixologist  Enrico Contro Frog, starting from 17.30.
The awards ceremony is scheduled later, in the afternoon of May 16, in conjunction with the General Assembly of the Istituto Italiano Imballaggio
.

Behind the Oscar 2017. This year, the contest is organized in cooperation with the Polytechnic of Milan’s School of Design, with the sponsorship of Conai for the special category Environment - Think Future, and Ipack-Ima 2018 for the special category Technology. This edition’s theme is Quality Design, so the jury’s assessments have hinged on the packaging’s design quality, which has been be judged according to the balance and harmony of communicational, structural and functional elements, with particular attention to the target/user. Innovations to graphics and communication capable of expressing and strengthening a brand or product identity, and the values associated with it, have been considered, but also the packaging’s performance in terms of accessibility and inclusiveness criteria, from the perspective of reaching a wider spectrum of users.

What it is for
Designed to facilitate the consumer, without the use of cutting tools, in draining the preserving liquid in food products and to easily pour powders.

- 14,7 t of CO2 for a truck of 33 pallets

Image and design
The new beaker design guarantees a perfect functioning in automatic vending machines despite a 13% weight reduction. Compared to the traditional beaker, the shape is more conical, allowing speedy separation, and the horizontal veins on the body give the structure rigidity. The embossing in the grip area and the more ergonomic oval shape increase the comfortability of use..
