The beverage alcohol group Diageo, owner of Johnnie Walker and Singleton Scotch whiskies, has begun construction of its first malt whisky distillery in China.

The $75 million (approximately €64.6 million) investment will result in the construction of a 66,000 square metre distillery in Eryuan County (Yunnan Province), where the temperate climate, rich natural biodiversity and access to natural spring water will allow for the production of a world-class single malt whisky.

Renewable and clean technologies will be used to ensure the distillery is a carbon neutral and zero-waste site and recycles all the water it uses in accordance with the group’s aim of reaching net-zero carbon by 2030.

The distillery will also feature an immersive and interactive visitor centre that will attract whisky enthusiasts and boost the local cultural tourism industry.
