Johnnie Walker converts to paper. The new packaging will be ready in 2021

The global beverage giant Diageo has announced that in 2021 it will launch the first ever 100% plastic free paper-based spirits bottle.

The bottle will debut with the iconic Johnnie Walker label, the world’s number one blended scotch whisky.

For this highly coordinated project, the British group has established a new partnership with venture management company Pilot Lite to launch Pulpex Limited, a new sustainable packaging technology company which is expected to enter into agreements with other leading players in the industry such as PepsiCo and Unilever.

This first-of-its-kind bottle is made from sustainably sourced pulp to meet food safety standards and will be fully recyclable.

The packaging has been designed to contain a variety of liquid products and will form part of Diageo’s commitment towards Goal 12 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals: “Responsible Consumption and Production”. This commitment will also lead to the opening of the first zero-impact distillery in Kentucky next year.
