Recyclable packaging and clean energy: the green commitment of Coca-Cola HBC Italia

The environmental results achieved by Coca-Cola HBC Italia and presented on 27 June in its 15th Sustainability Report are truly exceptional. The four manufacturing units use exclusively energy from renewable sources and packaging is already 100% recyclable.

The results stem from long-term projects involving the entire value chain, from the energy supply in drink production – adopting cogeneration plants installed at the production sites in Nogara (VR), Oricola (AQ) and Marcianise (CE) which produce energy, heat and chilled water – through to attention to post-consumption product life in accordance with European circular economy principles.

In terms of packaging, the company is focusing on four strategic goals.

The first is to reduce the weight and volume of packaging through actions such as the use of lower-weight plastic (PET) bottles, which are now 14% lighter, and greater use of recycled plastic.

Optimisation of secondary packaging is the second area in which Coca-Cola HBC Italia has achieved significant results with a 50% reduction in weight.

Thirdly, the company has begun using recycled materials and aims to reach 10% recycled plastic by December 2019 and 50% by 2030, exceeding the targets set by the European Union. Finally, in collaboration with CONAI system consortia, the company is encouraging consumers to dispose of packaging correctly.

In keeping with the Coca-Cola Hellenic Bottling Company Group’s commitments for 2025, actions also include attention to the growth and well-being of the more than 2,000 employees and community involvement in the areas where the company operates (20 Italian regions).
