Sales of packaged products see boost in Italy

According to an analysis conducted by Sole 24 ore based on interviews with plastics sector manufacturers and associations, packaged products are growing at the expense of bulk products.

The boom in packaged goods applies mainly to fruit and vegetables, as well as other categories such as bakery.

The most widely used plastic material is polystyrene, although there is strong growth in biodegradable and compostable plastics, a segment in which Italy is one of the world's leading players.

There has been a considerable decline in the use of already prohibited single-use products, largely due to the closure of almost all canteens operating in the country as well as schools and many companies.
