Greiner Packaging announces breakthrough in thermoforming techniques

T-IML thermoforming tests carried out in the Austrian company’s laboratories have resulted in monomaterial cups that are lighter and more sustainable than their injection-moulded counterparts

The research carried out by Greiner Packaging has led to a breakthrough in the field of thermoforming.

The Austrian company has developed T-IML (In-Mould Labelling in Thermoforming) technology which allows 500 ml cups to be labelled directly in the mould. The new cups are attractive and have clear advantages in terms of sustainability compared to their injection-moulded counterparts, including less consumption of material, lighter packaging and a smaller carbon footprint during transport.

The cups are available with a 95 mm diameter and weigh 11.4 grams (compared to the 15 grams of conventional solutions) and are made entirely of monomaterial polypropylene, including the label, so they are easily recyclable.

In the T-IML technique, a label is inserted directly into the thermoforming mould, thereby forming a solid bond with the finished product. This allows shaping and decoration to be performed efficiently in a single process.

Another advantage of the new packaging is the fact that barrier properties can be added to extend the food’s shelf life without affecting packaging recyclability. Matte, rough, glossy or soft-touch decorative effects can be applied, and the printed content is photo quality.
