Family Bag: say good-bye to waste, in style

In the wake of reflections instigated at Expo on food waste, a joint project is being launched in the Veneto region by the Ministry of the Environment, Unioncamere Veneto and CONAI (National Packaging Consortium).

On 10 December, 2015, in Padua, a document was signed establishing a program to promote the use in restaurants of the Family Bag. This container is produced and distributed by CONAI and is designed to carry leftovers home after a meal.
As part of the efforts of this initiative, 100 restaurants selected by Unioncamere Veneto will receive a supply of Family Bags, which are made using the materials of the various participating consortia: plastic (Corepla), aluminium (Cial), paper (Comieco), wood (Rilegno) and steel (Ricrea).
The initiative is also set to have a significant cultural impact. In fact, compared to the already widely known “doggy bag”, the new Family Bag has a new target use: it means firstly a semantic upgrade, by encouraging responsible behavior and transforming it into a practice shared with others. This moves beyond the preconceived notions surrounding embarrassedly asking for a bag.
In this sense, a lot of focus has been dedicated to design and communication: the logo and graphics are tailored like those of a fashion brand, with the naming in a texture that simply and cutely represents leftovers. The elegant, modern aesthetic of the packaging makes the Family Bag look like a clutch bag.
In short, bringing home the leftovers is made not only ethical, but chic.
