Aldi continues its “Missione Im-Ballo” packaging campaign
ALDI’s “Missione Im-Ballo! Ridurre. Riutilizzare. Riciclare.” (“Mission Packaging, Reduce. Reuse. Recycle”) campaign launched in 2018 with the aim of optimising the use of packaging materials and promoting virtuous packaging waste management is progressing well.
For the World Environment Day celebrated on 5 June, the multinational supermarket chain took stock of the results of the campaign. Compared to 2018, the company has reduced the use of plastics for packaging certain products, including coffee drinks (-35%), organic whole milk yoghurt (-56%) and Argentine shrimp (-80%), and reduced the weight of fitness and cholesterol lowering drinks (-30%). In addition, the packaging used for sliced salami in trays has been reduced by 10% and that of crackers by 23%.
The use of recyclable packaging for food products is growing, as is the percentage of recycled materials present in bottles used for household and personal care products such as shampoo (30% recycled plastic), multipurpose spray (50%), floor cleaner (50%), shower gel (100%) and spray bleach (100%).
In accordance with the circular economy for plastics, ALDI has also worked to improve the sustainability of the bottles used for its exclusive 100% Italian milk lines (Bonlà, Natura Felice and Enjoy Free). The new bottles are made from 50% recycled PET (r-PET) and are themselves 100% recyclable. This decision will reduce the quantity of new plastic released into the environment by more than 40 tons per year.
In its “Today for Tomorrow” programme, ALDI sets out its principles and actions aimed at guaranteeing sustainable development for the environment and society of the future. It has two major goals for 2025: to reduce the total weight of packaging for private label products by 25% with respect to turnover compared to 2018, and to increase the recyclability rate for all types of packaging for private label products.
As further proof of its commitment, ALDI is the first Italian retailer to use Social Plastic® for packaging selected fruit and vegetables. In partnership with the converter Carton Pack, ALDI supports Plastic Bank®, the social enterprise committed to collecting and recycling ocean-bound plastic released into the environment.
