Aldi gives new value to waste with “Social Plastic”
With the aim of converting waste into a resource that generates positive environmental, social and economic value, Aldi is launching a packaging waste management campaign called Missione Im-ballo with targets through to 2025.
The new challenge taken up by ALDI (part of the German ALDI SÜD chain) in collaboration with Carton Pack and Plastic Bank® consists of a selection of fruit and vegetables sold in food packaging made of 100% Social Plastic®. ALDI is the first major retailer to support Plastic Bank® in Italy, a project designed to help reduce ocean pollution and improve the lives of communities on the margins of society. The social enterprise is committed to collecting and recycling plastic released into the environment and working with the most directly affected coastal communities (Haiti, Indonesia, Philippines, Brazil and Egypt) to recover waste that is subsequently converted into Social Plastic®.
Through a partnership with Carton Pack, a leading Italian fruit and vegetable packaging converter and logistics company, Aldi has begun selling blueberries and raspberries from the ALDI “I Colori del Sapore” line packaged exclusively in Social Plastic®.
“ALDI is committed to continuously improving its food offerings while increasing caring for the environment,” commented Michael Gscheidlinger, Country Managing Director Italy. “We are proud to pursue new partnerships that bring improvements for society and consumers. The development of increasingly sustainable packaging is a way of taking action in one of the most sensitive areas of food production and distribution, and marks a further step towards achieving a circular, virtuous economy.”.
