More pooling, more sustainability
Unilever adopts across Europe the pallet pooling managed by Chep, which thus extends to Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Poland, Hungary, Romania and Scandinavia. The increase of traffic is about 70% and replaces the use of white pallets, in addition to reducing carbon dioxide emissions.
An independent LCA equipment study, carried out by Intertek RDC-Environment and compliant with ISO 14044, documents the lesser environmental impact of Chep’s pallet handling system compared to alternative systems that use interchangeable and one trip white pallets. Based on this evaluation, Unilever’s decision will generate savings of 4,700 tons per year of C02, equivalent to electricity consumption emissions of 750 homes, and will avoid 400 tons of wood being sent as waste to landfills.
