The aluminium tube in a new look

Announcing the winners of the International Aluminium Tube Design Awards 2014. Novel and attractive design concepts for the aluminium tube convince with form and function. Official award ceremony at the world’s largest packaging fair, interpack 2014, in Düsseldorf

Düsseldorf, 23 May 2014. For the second time, the European Tube Manufacturers Association (etma) has held the “YOUR TUBE AWARD” competition in appreciation of excellent concepts in the areas of product and graphic design for the aluminium tube. After an expert jury narrowed down the field of prize-deserving projects to five submissions, the winners of the YOUR TUBE AWARD 2014 were announced at interpack in Düsseldorf, where they proudly received the prizes. The race for places one to three was decided among design professionals and design students from Austria, Spain, and France, while the special prize for “Best Holistic Concept” went to young professionals from Germany and Spain. The winners of the international design competition on the subject of the aluminium tube shared a total prize purse of 10,000.

The aluminium tube in special focus
«The YOUR TUBE AWARD 2014 impressively shows just how intensively the designers involved themselves with the aluminium tube as a packaging solution.
It wasn’t just the issue of optical innovations, but also the special detail paid to the positive functional properties of the aluminium tube that proved to be the leitmotif of the submitted concepts» says Oliver Höll, Director of the etma project group in the Aluminium Tube Committee and member of this year’s design award jury. The positive characteristics of the aluminium tube are not restricted to the unique look-and-feel experience of the package material, but also reflect its outstanding functionality in terms of hygiene, product protection, convenience, and recyclability.

And the winners are…
The objective of the novel aluminium-tube design competition was to bring budding talents and experienced professional designers alike into contact with the excellent material properties of aluminium. The winning design concept with the project name “Sardelos” manages this in a particularly creative way: Designer Francois Gustin from Austria created a novel and spectacular design to yield an entirely new product image that has hardly anything left in common with the traditional design of the aluminium tube. Second place went to Pablo Torrecillas Monasterio from Spain for his project “Save the Brand”, an innovative tube shape that not only revolutionizes the concept of keeping a product in an aluminium tube, but also creates an entirely new “look and feel” experience. French graphic design student Tiphaine Rolland took third place with her project “Jellotube”, which shows just how easy it is to make optimal use of the tube and its contents thanks to a special “pushing element” attached to the end of the tube. The special prize for “Best Holistic Concept“, for example for fictive brands, was shared by two winners: German designer Shaz Ahmed convinced the expert jury with his project “Seal & Peel”, comprising a quick-drying special lacquer as a substitute for sealing wax that can be dispensed from the aluminium tube, as did also Vanesa Moreno Serna, a designer from Spain, whose project “Sweet Topping” features a novel functional closure for the decoration of sweet pastries.

The Award’s steps: from selection to the prizes
From September 2013 until February 2014, the etma was on the lookout for creative minds with new ideas for how to spotlight the alumin¬ium tube as a unique combination of material, design, and functionality, distinctly aimed at attracting young professionals and experienced designers just as much as students and talented newcomers at renowned design institutes, academies, and universities. Attracting 203 premium-quality and extraordinarily creative submissions from altogether 32 countries, the “International Aluminium Tube Design Award” can proudly claim to be a runaway success. Participants were able to submit their ideas and concepts on the special award website www.your-tube-award.aluminium-tubes.org at no cost to themselves. The creative experts were invited to stage the basic aluminium tube an innovative light without putting any bounds on their creativeness. The Aluminium Tube Committee of the European Tube Manufacturers Association (etma) paid special tribute to the working results by awarding prizes of 5,000 euros (first place), 2,000 euros (second place), and 1,000 euros (third place). The prize for the best holistic concept was jointly awarded to two winners, both of whom receiving a prize share of 1,000 euros for their special creative holistic ideas.
