COATHINK™ for high barrier packaging

A concrete example of supply chain collaboration, the partnership between SAES Coated Films and Sacchital Group creates a new line of high barrier, recyclable or compostable packaging.

The cornerstone of the partnership made official in Parma in October*  is the joint implementation of the skills in gas management developed by SAES in 70 years of history and in the converting technologies expressed by Sacchital to create sustainable packaging never before seen on the market, capable of making the difference.

The practice of collaboration. SAES Group through SAES Coated Films, a company specialized in functional coating technologies, and Sacchital Group, active in the production of flexible packaging in paper, aluminium and plastic materials, have therefore announced the start of a partnership for the production and promotion of a new line of high barrier and, at the same time, of recyclable or compostable packaging.
The two companies, engaged in various capacities in the same supply chain, have combined their expertise in materials, technology and scientific research in a vertical collaboration, to respond more quickly to market needs with an open business model.
The collaboration further strengthens the partnerships that the two Groups are maturing with other Italian industrial players, in particular with Novamont (plastic manufacturer) and Ticino Plast (extrusion and coextrusion of blown films for food, industrial, pharmaceutical and electronic packaging).

The cornerstones of the project. In line with the principles of the circular economy, on the one hand there is the coating technology developed by SAES Coated Films, called COATHINK ™ (born on the basis of previous experiences developed in the electronic field, it is a water based deposition technology, which functionalises the surfaces of the packaging giving them the properties of high barrier to gases). On the other hand, the paper-based multi-layer packaging, mono-plastic materials or high barrier bio-materials designed by Sacchital Group to be recycled or consigned as compost. In addition to expertise expressed by the actors involved, the shared conviction of aiming for innovation as a critical success factor, of which to each step is to be managed directly.

* The partnership between SAES Coated Film and Sacchital was officially presented during the Cibus Tec in Parma (three-year event dedicated to technological innovation in the food sector). Present at the conference, introduced by the CEO of Fiere di Parma Antonio Cellie, Massimo della Porta (President of SAES Group), Alberto Palaveri (CEO of Sacchital Group) and Professor Barbara Del Curto (Scientific Director of the Food Sustainability Observatory of the Milan Polytechnic).
