Inventors of paper

Favini proves its vocation for creativity and its competencies by presenting at Luxe Pack two models of sustainable reuse of raw materials: in the luxury spot light are Remake, a premium paper obtained from the waste products of processing leather, and Naturally Clicquot 3 paperboard, made from grape byproducts of Veuve Clicquot wine, awarded by Formes de Luxe.

For years committed to developing innovative natural packaging solutions for the luxury and fashion sector, Favini brought to Monaco two winning green solutions with a shared basic idea: pursuing sustainable cellulosic packaging means first and foremost researching raw materials in order to save virgin fiber by reusing byproducts from other production chains that can be integrated into traditional processes.

Remake: leather becomes paper

Until now, the scraps of the leather industry were used exclusively to make recycled leather and fertilizers, and much of them end up in a landfill. From this material, Favini has developed a new process that enables creating a recyclable and compostable product that can be made using traditional paper production processes.
The result is Remake, a premium paper that is 100% recyclable and compostable, guaranteeing high print and converting performance for any and all fashion and luxury applications, from brochures to shoppers, from cards to packaging.
Indeed, Remake is made up of 25% leather industry byproducts, 30% FSC-certified post-consumption recycled cellulose and 45% FSC certified virgin fiber.
The production process is a perfect example of up-cycling: through a complex process, in fact, the waste material is converted into a valuable product. Lending to the chic result, the visible bits of leather on the surface give the paper a distinctive texture with a special tactile effect, soft and surprisingly velvety, making it suitable for even the most refined designs.
In line with Favini’s green philosophy, production of Remake is estimated to save over 25% in greenhouse emissions compared to traditional paper. The impossible to avoid emissions are totally offset with carbon credits acquired by Favini to fund projects to reduce CO2 in the atmosphere.
A few hours after its launch, Remake was nominated for the Luxe Pack in Green 2015 award.

Every part of the grape is used
La maison Veuve Clicquot entrusted Favini with creating a box that combines sustainability and refinement. Naturally Clicquot 3 is 100% biodegradable and recyclable. It was developed by Favini in partnership with DS Smith through the creative re-use of byproducts resulting from the champagne making process. Thanks to Favini’s knowhow in creating papers from agri-industrial byproducts, grape pomace finds a new use that fully respects the environment. The skins are dried and micronized to make a unique ecological raw material for paper that enables conserving 25% of the virgin fiber.
Perfectly in line with the product’s sustainability, the graphics use solventless varnishes and a cane sugar-based compound for gluing the label.
Naturally Clicquot 3 won the Formes de Luxe 2015.

Free to design and produce

Thanks to digital technology, Mimaki’s in-house prototyping, which debuted in Monaco, reduces prototyping and sample creation times (from the normal 3-4 days to about an hour), enabling execution of extremely effective design, print and cutting operations internally.

The OGPS (Original Goods Packaging System) by Mimaki, which combines Esko’s ArtiosCAD software with the UJF-6042 UV LED inkjet printer with CFL-605RT cutting plotter, is destined to revolutionize concern’s design and production of small packaging lots. It offers a complete solution that enables achieving high quality runs at a competitive price in short time. The solution facilitates the work of designers, converters, commercial printers and small manufacturers, enabling designers to check the feasibility and visibility of designs, producing samples with even complex finishes, such as metallic effects and glossy varnishes.

The natural elegance of color

Gmund Colors is the range developed by Gmund for its most recent coating materials, from cardboard to innovative materials for luxury packaging with unmistakable, extraordinary tactile qualities and a natural look.
After intense research on color and perception, the German paper concern’s renowned creative lab selected the 48 foundational colors that humans are most satisfied to perceive. It’s a complete and finely balanced range of bright colors that can all be combined, covering all the main color shades: 9 blues, 4 cold grays and 5 warm, 7 greens, 5 brown spectrum shades and one perfect red.

The research and development team didn’t just focus on technical aspects, but also analyzed the problem from the standpoint of the marketing and communication possibilities of the offer, based on the pleasure and meaning the colors give: the blue range is favored for corporate identity, the browns and greens are ideal for communicating ecology and environmental protection, the warm colors appeal to the emotions and white is the preferred background for formal communications.
Gmund offers countless combinations that make it possible to create unique surfaces to embellish packaging and highlight brand identity. The concern’s product portfolio includes a series of paper supports classified according to visual and tactile properties:
- Gmund Colors Matt, handcrafted matt paper, natural looking, giving a unique tactile sensation;
- Gmund Colors Felt, available in 9 colors, the felt pattern is applied on the wet paper during production to create a perfect union of fiber, color and texture;
- Gmund Colors Metallic, available in 12 colors, a glossy metalized paper, perfected with just the right amount of pigment and high quality embossing;
- Gmund Colors Transparent, collection of lightly transparent and translucent papers, with a luminous effect. The transparent version is particularly effective with bright colors or in combination with matt papers.

Sartorial packaging
Tasked with defining an evocative idea of its vast offer of luxury papers and board, Icma developed the concept of “sartorial paper©”, which concisely conveys the extreme care of the brand’s uniqueness, that element that guarantees a brand’s immediate recognizability because it harnesses all its core elements.
In over 80 years of history, Icma has accumulated around 300 matrices in its archives (80 of which available), that can be combined with a spectrum of 100 colors.
The various finishes (spreading, lamination, and other techniques) exponentially increase the range of combination and decoration. Icma’s technology and machinery enables achieving special effects even on the “hidden side” of the sheet, such as anti-slide, anti-stick and thermal adhesive.
Icma’s offer is characterized by the extreme care put into its textures, taking inspiration from myriad sources: natural fibers, woods, animal hides, metals and tech. Each paper conveys enticing sensations, not just visually, but also to the touch, because packaging is made to be touched and handled.

Tower and Tailor: catalogs of knowledge
In order to make tangible to the concept of “sartorial paper” with consultation tools that enable creatives to design packaging ad hoc, Icma has organized its range of textures, colors and finishes in two catalogs.
- Tower: the shorter, user-friendly version, divided by themes, gathers together the range of articles always available in palettes that can be modified and customized (even simply by changing color or finish);
- Tailor: created to entice the imagination of creatives and invite them to dare, this brand new publication, presented exclusively at Luxe Pack, includes in 2 volumes the entirety of the Icma offer, supported by daring examples of prints.
In order to suggest the best solution in terms of effectiveness (in brand marketing strategy), efficiency and economy (with supplies that can be reconfigured anytime, even for small quantities), the experience of Icma’s consultants is always at the customer’s disposal to guide their choices in the infinity of possible combinations.

Airless, with elegance
Pure Drop, a line of high-end flacons for skincare are a result of the partnership between the Pochet Group and the South Korean company Samhwa Plastic. They combine the best of airless technology with a customisable, premium aesthetic appeal. Samhwa Plastic has contributed with its skills and knowhow in airless technology, that enables a perfect, controlled dosing of highly complex, high viscosity formulas. These systems are still little used in the luxury sector, in that it is hard to adapt them: the elegant design of Pure Drop and the decorations with precious materials, seem to have overcome this limitation.
