A spiral bottle for orange soda

In the Fanta brand update process, Sidel actively participated in the development and industrialization of the new bottle for the Coca-Cola Company (TCCC).


The new PET bottle design developed by Drink Works for the Fanta brand breaks the rules of carbonated soft drink container design. Taking its inspiration from the motion one makes to juice an orange, the spiral shape is based on a series of ribs decorated with bubbles, with the lower half of the bottle twisting. This dynamic effect creates a unique, asymmetrical shape, posing a real challenge for developers tasked with making a container that will maintain its structure and stability when handled.
The packaging designers fully defended the spiral-shaped design of PET container for carbonated beverages in the name of originality, and Sidel managed to overcome the obstacles to industrialization that the design posed.

The fact that all opposing sides of the bottle were made the same length was essential to avoiding right angles. Sidel also optimized the grip and the orientation of the angular base in order to maintain the bottle’s geometry after filling.
The design constantly evolved throughout the course of the project, both from a brand marketing perspective and from that of packaging performance. The developers finally guaranteed perfect control of how the bottle stood up under pressure and achieved the quality and performance requirements set by Coca-Cola.

Another request fulfilled was the alignment of the size and positioning of the label panel with those of Sprite and Contour bottles.
Without compromising on the design, Drink Works moved the label panel higher up toward the neck of the bottle.

This technical solution has generated efficiency advantages for Coca-Cola’s bottling partners during production of various bottle types and label changeover. The new label panel positioning carries an additional advantage in excellent visibility, avoiding the risk of the label being blocked from view on the shelf or display.
