TAGHLEEF INDUSTRIES AND POPLAST
Stand-up pouch for food and non-food products SUSTAINABLE | RESPONSIBLE | SAFE

What it is. The stand-up pouch made of 100g/m² one-side coated paper laminated with Taghleef Industries' high barrier film EXTENDO® XZMX 18 μm combines the advantages of BoPP films with barrier performance similar to traditional polymers, high performance in terms of weight reduction and improved recyclability of the packaging.

Materials. In an effort to offer a sustainable alternative to the most common traditional non-recyclable films, Taghleef Industries and Poplast are offering a 100g/m² one-side coated paper structure laminated to EXTENDO® XZMX 18 μm high barrier film as a replacement for traditional aluminium and metallised PET films. The solution provides high barrier to oxygen, water, flavors and superior protection from mineral oil contamination.

Product or target market. Food powders and granulates, microalgae, candied fruit, nuts and vegetables (preferably, with a low liquid component). Also tested the mechanical characteristics in ice cream packaging applications, verifying the resistance up to 1 kg of weight. The pouch is also suitable for protective packaging of non-food products, such as catalysts for adhesives.

Design. The joint development carried out in the R&D departments of the two companies has made it possible to develop unprecedented methods of treating the paper, which give greater resistance to the material and excellent protection to the product.

Technology. EXTENDO® XZMX 18 μm high barrier film is laminated to a paper processed with innovative lamination and printing techniques. The result is a structure that can withstand thermal processes such as pasteurization (100 °C for 20 min) and hot air sterilization (121°C for 35 min), making it suitable for packaging products that require an extended shelf-life.

Sustainability. Besides being in line with the principles of circular economy, the proposed stand-up pouch contributes to product preservation, with a view to reducing food waste. In addition, this laminated structure combines the protection characteristics guaranteed by the high-barrier EXTENDO® film with the possibility of conferring the pack, at the end of its life, to the paper recycling chain, for which the evaluation for the achievement of Aticelca certification is underway. Since the solution presented is made of 100g/m² paper and non-paper materials represent only 17% by mass, a Level B classification (which provides for a coarse waste of 10 to 20%) is expected.
