The responsible packaging of… Henkel Italia

Henkel Italia Detergency also “plays” the sustainability card in its promo activities. Fielding consumer targeted promotional actions has become fundamental to modern retail distribution.

The resorting to collars, generally in cardboard or paper, enables the creation of multipacks of the same or different products or again, it enables the issuing of vouchers, additional information or invitations to take part in competitions… With good results in terms of improved visibility and the appeal of the product in question.

Hence Henkel examined the possibility of shifting the consumption of cellulosic materials in their promotional activities from virgin fibres to recycled material (and in the absence of availability of recycled paper, to using paper from FSC/PEFC managed forests). The has led to an important choice, that has enabled the replacement of 500 t/year of virgin fibres with fibres form recycled paper and cardboard, all to the advantage of the environment.
Indeed for Henkel the question of the collars is not an isolated one. The use of recycled material is part of a process begun by the multinational many years ago, and that in the first instance involved corrugated cardboard boxes and all secondary packaging: where possible in fact the kraft paper hitherto used in making the boxes was replaced by recycled board. In more recent times, Henkel has set itself an even more ambitious goal, introducing a 25% of recycled plastic in all its PET flacon series: the result among other things won them the environment section award in the 2010 Packaging Oscar.
Hence once again, the process of introducing board containing at least 80% recycled fibres underway in all its paper and cardboard items clearly shows Henkel’s will to proceed in fulfilling its commitments to environmental sustainability, applying to its daily practise an approach started up 30 years ago, when there was still little to no talk of green economy.

The “good packaging” proposal continues. After having collected together in a volume various instances of optimization of paper and cardboard packaging, Comieco is encouraging companies to transmit the improvements adopted fulfilling the shared definition of “responsible packaging”*.

* For “RESPONSIBLE” is meant packaging that feature qualities that combine environmental safety, respect of the needs of all users and improvement of economic, social and cultural aspects.
