Jaw gripper with pure sensitivity

The OFG from Schmalz ensures reliable and safe automated handling when placing food in packages.

Automated processes help make the food industry more efficient and safer. Gripping and handling devices play a very significant role here, since they come into direct contact with the products that reach the consumer's table and must therefore guarantee hygienic handling without any impact on the products themselves.

In order to achieve this and to pack foodstuffs such as doughnuts, chocolates, fruit and vegetables in their packaging in a gentle, safe and automated manner, J. Schmalz GmbH (a leading company in vacuum automation solutions and ergonomic handling systems) has introduced the new OFG gripper in its product range. The four rounded jaws mimic the fingers of the hand and are made of silicone. By increasing the pressure inside the gripper, they contract and adhere to the geometry of the product. When the pressure is reduced, the jaws return to their original position. In this way, the OFG carefully and precisely positions delicate products, even on trays placed next to each other.

Available versions and features. The basic body and control unit define the requirements of the product. The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) compliant version is ideal for all hygienic applications: the basic body is made of PET-P (polyethylene terephthalate), a feature that facilitates cleaning operations. In addition, an alternative version with an aluminum base body is available. This model is particularly suitable for industrial applications, e.g. in the field of logistics, or as an assembly aid. To improve the gripping force and stability, Schmalz also offers an optional version with a centrally positioned bellows suction pad. The "Basic" control unit is responsible for opening and closing via vacuum and pressure, while the "Controlled" control allows parameters to be configured via USB or serial interface. In addition, users can integrate a robot control and continuously adjust the opening angle and gripping force.
The OFG operates in a pressure range of -0.8 to a maximum of 1.6 bar, boasts repeatability accuracy in the range of ± 0.06 mm, while gripping speed is 0.05 seconds. It is also heat resistant up to 200 °C and, thanks to IP68 protection, water and dust resistant.
