Water-repellent barrier coatings for paper

International printing ink producer Hubergroup Print Solutions has launched HYDRO-X GA Water Barrier Coating, a new water-repellent water-based coating formulated for surface printing of food and non-food packaging that avoids the need for PE film lamination as a water barrier.

Changing from conventional packaging to pure paper packaging with a barrier coating is a cost-effective and more environmentally friendly option. GA is suitable for both coated and uncoated paper and can switch from laminate structures to mono-material paper. It can be applied inline using conventional printing units.

The product offers numerous other advantages, including recyclability, reduced processing times and lower materials costs due to savings on plastic films. The company is also working intensively to develop and manufacture additional protective coatings, such as an oxygen barrier coating. More products are therefore expected to be launched throughout the year.
