Decentralized microcontroller with virtual device

Beckhoff’s embedded PC CX8093 features a Profinet-RT Device interface, implemented via 2-port switch for executing daisy-chain wiring. This solution enables configuring a virtual device, which makes it possible to double the amount of process data, or to connect a second Profinet Controller.

The two alternatives. The optional virtual device (slave interface) enables the CX8093 to operate as if it were two distinct Profinet devices and, thus, to process double the maximum amount of input/output data: in the case of Profinet, 1000 bytes. The network address of both virtual devices is set with a switch or through the TwinCAT System Manager, while the IP settings are assigned by the Profinet Controller. A further advantage of the virtual device derives from the possibility of communicating with a second Profinet Controller, considerably enhancing the system’s flexbility and power. On one hand, the CX8093 can verify the coherence of input signals from two masters (because it is a local control). On the other, it is possible to identify a malfunction in a Controller and therefore operate through the second master.

“Capacity” and connectivity. The integrated PC CX8093, with its compact dimensions of 65x100x80 mm, features: Windows CE6.0 operating system, 400-MHz ARM9 CPU, 64 MBytes RAM and a MicroSD card expandable up to 4 GBytes. In addition to the terminal buses, it is also possible to connect the EtherCAT terminals directly, but the CX80xx series is also available with other bus systems, including Ethernet, Profibus, BACnet/IP, CANopen or OPC UA. Upon startup, the CX8093 automatically recognizes which of the two I/O systems is actually hooked up.
Another unique feature of this solution by Beckhoff is represented by the UPS with 1 second capacity, which memorizes persistent data in case of missing tension. Control is programmed using TwinCAT PLC automation software.
