Sustainability in a tray

Long live the red Italian chicory in its news paperboard tray. Vouched for by the Consortium.

Made in Italy is at its best at the dinner table and with quality agricultural products: the IGP red chicory of Treviso and variegated chicory of Castelfranco is for example an Italian excellence  recognized throughout the world.
Paulo Manzan, president of the Consortium for the protection and promotion of the IGP red chicory of Treviso and variegated chicory of Castelfranco, is one of the producers engaged in the forefront to ensure the quality of this prized vegetable.

Among the tasks of the Consortium, founded in 1996 following the awarding of IGP or “indicazione geografica protetta” status, it is also stated it is «to assist producers and packers in order to facilitate and improve the production and marketing in Italy and abroad of protected products».
Indeed here too the packaging is essential for preserving the flavour, color and technical characteristics.
So far the paperboard tray market has developed products with paper from parafined virgin fibre.

Pro-Gest, a company that for over 40 years has been working in the world of paper and paperboard, has recently developed an innovative packaging, capable of combining 100% recycled paper with the technical properties of moisture and stacking resistance, but also with the necessary characteristics of suitability for food contact. The result has been obtained by applying a thin polyester film, which does not affect the recycling of the paperboard.
The IGP red chicory and variegated chicory Consortium was one of the first subjects to experience the innovation of Pro-Gest and believe in the added value of adopting sustainable packaging for its prized vegetable.
The producers of chicory, distributed in 55 municipalities in the provinces of Treviso, Padua and Venice, hence now have a possible alternative to their usual packaging, what is more a "zero km" innovation,  which enables them to bring an ever higher quality - or one should say better preserved - product to people’s dinner tables.
