Beauty Report 2015

At the annual assembly of Cosmetica Italia, held last June 23rd, a new publication sponsored by the Association was presented.

As president Fabio Rossello explained, the project is the result of merging two existing sector publications: the Beauty Report and the Annual Report.

Not doing without cosmetics. Now in its sixth edition in partnership with Ermeneia, the release of the Beauty Report represents an occasion for knowledge-building devised to support the reputation of Italian cosmetics through an analysis of the behavior of concerns, consumers and supply chain phenomena. This year’s focus is on direct sales, a channel which in 2014 accounted for 5.7% of the cosmetics sector’s turnover.
«We are at the end of a cycle that has seen Italian cosmetics position itself better than other non-durable goods sectors and enhance its competitiveness in spite of the crisis» commented Nadio Delai, Ermeneia’s president. Cosmetics remain an essential product, as demonstrated by the consumers, who while having altered their habits, have now incorporated the hardships of last few years into a recent sobered attitude toward making purchases.

The sector invests and grows. As the director of Cosmetica Italia’s research center explained, «For the 47th Annual Report we have widened the scope of our analysis of the cosmetics supply chain with the objective of offering an economic overview that gives a dynamic and reasoned picture of phenomena in the various links of the chain. With a total turnover nearing 14,000 million euro, the Italian cosmetics industry’s long supply chain (from cosmetics ingredients, to production machinery, packaging and finally the finished product) appears quite robust, incorporating manufacturers upstream and downstream, in addition to concerns in direct contact with the customer».

The report confirms the numbers of Italy’s cosmetics industry, showing its inelasticity. Indeed, turnovers are holding (with 10 years of sustained growth) at a 2014 value exceeding 9,300 million euro (+0.8%). The marginal negative growth of domestic consumption (-1.4%) has been counterbalanced by +4.9% exports (3,334 million euro in 2014). In spite of imports at +2%, the balance of trade for the sector remains amply positive, confirming a record value approaching 1,650 million euro..
