Collection and recycling of disposable cups
Veolia, international company that operates in waste management, has recently launched a program for the collection and recycling of used coffee cups, in collaboration with some of the major chains of coffee shops in the United Kingdom, where every day 7 million coffees are consumed in disposable cups.
Until recently this enormous amount of resources was not recycled but only disposed of as normal waste, mostly burned in incinerators. Today, thanks to a special system, the cups recovered are decontaminated from food residues (consumers are still invited to empty their cups and stack them upside down) and then sent for recycling.
Subsequently, the pulp is reused for new products of all kinds: a solid case of circular economy, that enables the hygiene, safety and the convenience of disposable cups to be maintained simultaneously.
