A “green” label chain
Oreal Americas and Avery Dennison have teamed up to assess and reduce the environmental impact of the labels affixed to the packaging of the beauty multinational, for this purpose reconsidering the entire lifecycle of the product.
«To achieve increasingly significant results in terms of sustainability - highlighted for the occasion David Wolbach, assistant vice president of Oreal Americas Packaging Hair - we cannot do so alone, but collaboration between all actors in the supply chain is essential». Material suppliers, printers, as well as representatives of consumers and of the recycling industry have called into question directly, and are invited to “cooperate in a clear and transparent way to build together a new global standard of low impact products».
Avery Dennison, long engaged in the development of new technologies for sustainable labeling, responds fielding the experience gained with the program Greenprint. Launched in 2010, it has featured a system that affects all the steps in the production of a label, from raw material extraction to end of life management, and significantly reduces the greenhouse gas emissions, water consumption and energy and waste during disposal.
On the basis of these results, Oreal has decided to create the labels of some top products with the Global MDO ™ Avery Dennison, reducing the overall environmental impact by an average of 12%. Global MDO ™ is a self-adhesive structure formed by a very thin PET support (about half of other films) and recyclable – hence reducing transportation and disposal costs - and by Avery Dennison ClearCut ™ S7000 adhesive technology that in turn ensures saving in the order of 40%. The substrate thus obtained has also a superior transparency(+ 30%).
