Novamont doubles biopolyester production
Having completed its acquisition of 100% of Mater-Biopolymer from the Mossi & Ghisolfi Group 2016, Novamont has activated the second phase in a project to convert the Mater-Biopolymer plant in Patrica (FR) in order to double its output of ORIGO-BI® biopolyesters, which are used to enhance the technical, economic and environmental performance of MATER-Bi® biodegradable and compostable bioplastics.
The concern has also developed new chemicals and production processes, thereby providing another strong impulse to upstream integration of Novamont’s supply chain.
The Mater-Biopolymer plant in Patrica belonged to M&G in 2009 and was equipped with two PET production lines, one of which had been stopped.
Thanks to a partnership that started in 2009, Novamont has been working to convert this line by integrating its own technology, before unveiling the new continuous installation for the production of ORIGO-BI (biodegradable polyesters obtained from monomers in vegetable oils) in 2011, which became a flagship system and an important link in Novamont’s biorefinery operation.
By the first quarter of 2018, having completed the conversion of the second production line, which makes use of technological advances made possible by the experience of the first line, Novamont will double its capacity for producing ORIGO-BI biopolyesters, bringing it from 50,000 t/yr to 100,000 t/yr.
