Google Glass for GS1 codes

“Smart” and cutting-edge new mobile devices to scan GS1 barcodes. Using the Google Glass platform, they allow users to scan the code printed on the pack to receive various types of information on the product - from nutritional contents to recipes, going by way of special offers or consumers’ views, perhaps for instant sharing with a simple voice recording on social media.

The first European demonstration of the process was given during the last Mobile World Congress in Barcelona by GS1, that has developed them along with the Open Mobile Alliance (leading organization for standards in mobile telephony) and the Swiss Research Institute Icare.
«The next generation of devices to scan GS1 barcodes will be key for data access - said Malcolm Bowden, President of GS1 Global Solutions - and our demonstration on Google Glass aims to show the manufacturers and distributors of solutions for the mobile telephony how easy it is to share information via cell phone. The potential is enormous and one day these components might be included in the libraries of all Android and iOS devices».
GS1 and OMA have been working together since 2011 to manage to scan barcodes directly from portable “cellphones” and are finalizing a specification based on existing standards, that cellphone manufacturers will be able to use already at the end of 2014. In this way apps developers will be able to more easily integrate GS1 codes scanning functions and links to product information.
