Public and Private defending food resources

With 173 participants from 12 nations, the first Save Food Meeting 2015 (hosted by the Nestlé headquarters at Vevey in Switzerland 11 and 12 of May last, was a success according to all: representatives of politics and the scientific community, the numerous partners (to date 120) involved in the undertaking started up by Messe Düsseldorf, the 230 NGOs and the international organizations (including the FAO and UNEP).

Hence the Save Food Meeting mustered the companies interested on the themes of preservation of food resources and the fight against waste. Objective of the conference was to promote a dialogue on these problems between representatives of industry, the academic world and research, as well as the political representatives and those of civil society, starting up appropriate pilot projects, thanks to the contribution and coordination of different subjects.
The encounter was held on Lake Geneva under the motto “Support from the private sector to projects against food wastage and waste reduction”. During the event the matter was gone into for a longterm cooperation between institutions of the private and public sector. The speakers also presented successful undertakings already underway, supported by private enterprise.
One of the projects, for which the latest updates were given, is dedicated to the production of mangos in Kenya. The undertaking includes the participation of different companies associated with Save Food, that have made available powerful processing and packaging technologies to reduce waste in the production chain and create greater value within the country. As well as intensifying the efficiency in serving Kenyan domestic demand, the project will also positively affect export shares.

“SAVE FOOD - Solutions for a world aware of its resources” was officially presented 27 January 2011 in Berlin, Germany by Messe Düsseldorf and the FAO, joint partners in the undertaking. Objective: put the issue of global food losses onto the political and economic agenda of each single country.
