Sustainable choices in the preserved food packaging sector

In response to market forces, consumer preferences and product evolution, the Dutch company Coroos - one of Europe’s top producers of preserved fruit, vegetables and pulses in jars, cans and flexible packaging - has accelerated the transition towards sustainable production and distribution.

Driven by the need to process different types of packaging, the company has introduced secondary packaging technologies capable of coping with the wide variety of packaging types and formats while meeting the need for energy saving and greater attention to the environment.

Specifically, Coroos opted for secondary packaging technology from Cama Group capable of using recyclable cardboard instead of plastic, continuing a longstanding business relationship between the two companies (the first Cama machine was installed in 2002 and the latest six months ago).

While introducing more sustainable packaging materials, the Dutch manufacturer also took account of OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness), i.e. the overall performance of the equipment, maintenance costs, consumption and parts wear and the many other factors that contribute to the overall impact of a machine. With this in mind, Coroos opted for filling and sealing lines from Zacmi to complement the solutions supplied by Cama.

Coroos’ director George Oostrom commented: “We were already producing 200 million cans with the equipment installed in our plant. But as we were looking to change the machines, we decided to adopt the Zacmi concept which guarantees higher quality, higher speeds, better hygiene and elevated worker safety. Our choice was based on trust and also on the affinities between the two Italian companies, which supply cutting-edge technologies and often collaborate on project development (through their membership of the Smart Packaging Hub, Editor)”.

*Smart Packaging Hub was created by the Cama Group and six other Italian machinery manufacturers (Baumer, Opem, Zacmi, Clevertech, Makro Labeling and Tosa) with diverse skills and areas of specialisation in food & beverage packaging as part of an approach geared towards digitalisation and Industry 4.0.
