Attivo! packaging more active than ever, even against Covid
According to the results of scientific research into food safety in the age of the global pandemic presented by Prof. Lucia Vannini from Bologna University’s Department of Agri-Food Science and Technology during the online webinar organised as part of the Askfood project, Attivo! branded packaging for fruit and vegetables is able to “promote and speed up the elimination of the Sars-CoV-2 virus, even when present at high levels on its surface”.
In her talk, Prof. Vannini presented the results of tests carried out on innovative packaging with anti-Coronavirus activity, noting in particular that Attivo! packaging, a corrugated cardboard solution with added natural antimicrobials, reduces the deterioration of fruit and vegetable products by inhibiting degradative and pathogenic microorganisms.
Developed as a partnership between the Bestack consortium and the microbiology group of the Department of Agri-Food Science and Technology (DISTAL) at the University of Bologna, Attivo! has proved its ability not only to increase shelf life and reduce wastage of fruit and vegetables, but also to reduce the persistence of Sars-CoV-2.
This initial research project on the theme of Covid and food safety exploited the interdisciplinary expertise of the University of Bologna and was conducted by the Food Microbiology and Food Technology groups of DISTAL and the Microbiology group of the Department of Specialist, Diagnostic and Experimental Medicine at the University of Bologna.
