Monini, 2030 sustainability plan includes packaging
Monini, a pioneering Italian extra virgin olive oil producer based in the Umbria region, has announced a sustainability plan that will see it invest €25 million by 2030 in three major areas: “In campo” (“In the field”), “Dentro la bottiglia” (“In the bottle”) and “Sulla tavola” (“On the table”).
The first step in the programme is a project to plant a total of 1 million olive trees on a one thousand hectare site in Italy, creating a new green space called “Bosco Monini” (the “Monini Wood”) which will be capable of absorbing 50,000 tons of CO2 in 10 years.
Monini is also planning to switch entirely to integrated and organic farming and to invest in irrigation systems with the aim of reducing water consumption. Goals include the use of recycled material for 100% of its green glass bottles and research aimed at creating innovative, lightweight and sustainable packaging.
Product origin will be declared using low environmental impact labels and FSC7 cardboard packaging, while PVC caps will be gradually replaced by other solutions with a lower impact.
The 100% Italian olive oil will be certified by the Consorzio Extravergine di Qualità (High quality extra virgin olive oil consortium, or CEQ) while supply chain traceability based on blockchain technology will guarantee the utmost transparency for consumers.
The company posted revenues of €140 million in 2019 and was the top brand in volume terms in the period January-April 2020, with 44% of its output exported to 60 countries around the world.
