Packaging changes colour and becomes a game
PepsiCo is focusing on interactive packaging with a limited-edition series of thermochromic cans dedicated to football fans. Thanks to the use of temperature-sensitive ink, the cans begin to change colour at 12°C and turn a vibrant blue when cooled to the optimal drinking temperature of 8°C. Of the 86 million football-themed cans hitting shelves, 150,000 will be special “Perfect Chilled” variants. The colour change not only has an informative purpose but also turns the packaging into a powerful tool for consumer engagement: anyone who finds one of the special cans can gain access to exclusive contests and prizes. The initiative reflects the growing use of smart technologies and functional inks in beverage packaging, where the container is no longer limited to protecting and communicating the product but becomes an integral part of the consumer experience.
When geometry makes the difference
Mastronardi Produce has earned the 2026 CPMA Packaging Innovation Award for SUNSET® Tomato Branch™, a packaging design for greenhouse-grown, on-the-vine micro-grape tomatoes that directly mirrors the product’s natural shape. The distinctive feature of the packaging lies in its triangular format, designed to mimic the natural branching structure of tomatoes on the vine. Made from fully recyclable materials and with strong shelf appeal, the packaging combines sustainability and product enhancement while serving as a powerful branding and communication tool.
Smart packaging that limits mobile connectivity
KitKat Panama, in collaboration with Ogilvy Colombia, has introduced a smart packaging solution that doubles as an active digital detox tool. Operating on a principle similar to a Faraday cage, the wrapper incorporates layers of conductive and polymer materials that block electromagnetic signals. Consumers simply place their smartphone inside the resealable wrapper, where the combination of polyester, a conductive layer, copper and nickel temporarily reduces the device’s mobile and wireless connectivity, blocking notifications and interruptions. This allows for a temporary break from digital use in line with the brand’s longstanding focus on the concept of “Break Mode”. The project is part of the trend toward functional smart packaging, where the container evolves from a passive element into an experiential interface capable of influencing consumer behaviour.
