CELLOGRAFICA Gerosa SpA | Best Packaging 2026

Product overview. The primary goal of the project is the development, validation, and industrial-scale application of a paper-based material for twist wrap confectionery packaging. It combines high technical process performance with advanced sustainability and recyclability standards, without compromising production efficiency. The project addresses the challenge of replacing traditional plastic or multi-layer materials in high-speed confectionery packaging, offering a predominantly cellulose-based solution that ensures: reliable operation on automatic lines at very high speeds; effective barrier against fat migration and compliance with food contact requirements; mechanical stability during twisting; and recyclability within the paper stream, certified according to recognised standards.

Innovation. The project overcomes the structural limits of paper through chemistry and design. Two key innovations stand out: functional lacquering, i.e. a protective internal anti-grease coating that resolves the inherent porosity of cellulose substrates, and optimised runability – the material is engineered to sustain extremely high packaging speeds (1,400–1,500 units/min) without mechanical modifications to existing lines, ensuring a stable double-twist wrap with no shape‑memory effect.

Materials used. Development of a high-performance paper-based material comprising 42 g/m² paper, optimised rotogravure printing, and a food-contact-compliant lacquer resistant to fat migration.

Technologies. The project successfully achieved its initial objectives, proving the technical and industrial feasibility of a paper-based solution for twist-wrap confectionery packaging. This solution combines exceptional processing performance with advanced sustainability and recyclability requirements. The outcomes deliver positive impacts for both the market segment and the company involved.

Environmental benefits. The project aims to achieve tangible outcomes, including a sector-wide shift in confectionery packaging towards more sustainable models, demonstrating that paper-based solutions can deliver performance levels comparable to conventional materials, even in technically demanding applications such as high-speed twist-wrap packaging. Additionally, the product has been awarded Aticelca A+ certification.

Benefits for end users. Stronger technological and innovative positioning in the food packaging market. Expansion of the product offering with solutions already aligned with EU PPWR requirements, increasing appeal to sustainability-conscious brand owners without compromising production efficiency. Reduction of regulatory risk and enhancement of medium- to long-term competitiveness. The project aims to provide an industrially viable, sustainable and replicable solution, capable of generating value across the entire food packaging supply chain.

Communication advantages. The project is a successful application case in food packaging, generating tangible value for the market by combining product innovation with environmental sustainability. It also strengthens consumer perception of making responsible and conscious purchasing choices.
