Sappi introduces barrier paper technology

Sappi Europe is set to introduce new barrier coating technology for functional paper packaging at its speciality mill in Alfeld, Germany, increasing its production capacity for sustainable paper packaging solutions.

The investment reaffirms the company’s commitment to developing eco-friendly solutions with a low environmental impact, as barrier papers make additional coatings or special laminations unnecessary and can be recovered in the paper recycling chain.

The increase in production capacity responds to the growing demand for sustainable packaging, a rapidly developing segment driven by responsible consumer choices.

In 2017, Sappi increased its expertise in the field of barrier paper with the acquisition of UK-based Rockwell Solutions.

Production with the new technology is expected to begin in the first half of 2022.
