Coppa del Nonno adopts bio-based packaging
The iconic brown plastic cup used by Coppa del Nonno ice cream producer is being transformed to reflect the brand’s environmental commitment. From now on, the famous coffee ice cream will be packaged in eco-friendly plastic cups made from bio-based polypropylene supplied by the French multinational Total. The packaging (100 million pieces in four years) will be produced by Gallarate-based company MPG Manifattura Plastica under commission from the multinational Froneri (a joint venture between Nestlé and R&R Ice Cream).
“This is an important innovation, not just for our company but for all end customers who are being offered an environmentally responsible consumer product,” says Giampiero Perego, Chairman of MPG. “Specifically, we are bringing to market a product with a reduced environmental impact, which translates into a saving of up to 2.5 kg of CO2 per kg of polymer produced compared to the use of fossil-based polymers.”
Although bio-based materials currently account for a limited percentage of MPG’s volumes, the company has set itself the goal of achieving 100% sustainable production and abandoning fossil-based polypropylene altogether within a few years. The company is also the first in Italy to gain ISCC Plus certification (International Sustainability & Carbon Certification) for the production of sustainable and fully recyclable rigid plastic food packaging.
Most of its production is concentrated on packaging for the food industry, where it boasts a series of prestigious clients including Froneri, Igor Gorgonzola, Unilever and Valsoia for ice cream and Kraft-Heinz for baby food.
