Sales of bottled water continue to grow in the USA
The US bottled water market expanded to reach a total of 54.6 billion litres in 2019, surpassing the 52.3 billion litres of 2018 (+3.6%).
In value terms, the increase was 5.6% to a total of €19.4 billion (average price €0.37/litre). Per capita consumption stood at almost 167 litres, higher than the average consumption of carbonated soft drinks, which fell below 140 litres. It is estimated that the level could reach 190 litres per capita by 2024.
Single serve packs have become the most popular bottled water option, accounting for the majority of sales volumes (up by more than 4% to nearly 10.1 billion gallons in 2019).
According to Beverage Marketing Corporation, the management consulting firm that conducted the survey, volumes of bottled water have been growing steadily since 1977 as American consumers shift towards healthier forms of rehydration and refreshment.
