Konica Minolta Sensing is continuing its growth in the hyperspectral imaging market following the acquisition of Finnish company Specim.

Konica Minolta’s acquisition of hyperspectral imaging (HSI) specialist Specim in late 2020 is generating the desired synergies and significantly strengthening the Sensing Business Unit’s position in the HSI market.

The incorporation of the Finnish company has proceeded in stages, culminating in the official introduction of Specim products into the portfolio of Konica Minolta Sensing Europe.

Specim has a product lineup that covers a wide range of measurement wavelengths, from visible to long-wave infrared, as well as specific usage scenes. It has a customer base in industries ranging from food to pharmaceuticals and plastics recycling. In addition, this year Specim announced a platform called SpecimONE that will make it easier and faster to incorporate hyperspectral imaging technology into sorting machines, with the aim of further expanding its HSI business in industrial applications.

Konica Minolta’s entry into the field of HSI, a key technology for visualising the invisible, will enable it to expand its business and deliver sustainable solutions to global social challenges in the areas of safety, security and environmental science and to industrial sectors devoted to plastics recycling, food sorting and remote sensing.

Konica Minolta also aims to accelerate the expansion of its value proposition in its existing business domain through synergies with its image processing and optical technologies. In particular, Konica Minolta will expand its business in collaboration with manufacturers of sorting equipment for recycling and food products, and strategically target growth markets such as pharmaceuticals. In keeping with its stated growth strategy, the first Specim products that Konica Minolta Sensing will introduce into its portfolio are the HSI IQ and FX camera series.
