The culture of sustainability

Social responsibility and respect for the environment for Tetra Pak constitute the foundations of a longterm strategy that cannot be tackled with sporadic initiatives. In particular, the Sustainability Report presented in early November by Tetra Pak Italia (Rubiera, RE) at the Ecomondo fair, Rimini, figures to hand, shows the manufacturer’s constancy and commitment in reducing the environmental impact of its packaging. The company has also managed to reduce its energy consumption, while increasing collection, recovery and recycling of its packs.

Among the results obtained, one is struck by the over 38 million Italians and 4,500 municipalities now involved in the collection of Tetra Pak containers: a milestone attained by the Italian branch of the Swedish multinational that via an extensive awareness creating campaign, has also managed to involve more than half of Italy in the challenge to sort products that do not fall into a specific material category in that they are comprised of paper, aluminium and thin layers of polyethylene.
Not only is more than half the country involved in sorting its containers, with some 22,700 tons of Tetra Paks sent for recycling, but considerable figures have also been achieved in terms of product traceability and energy saving: of the 4 and a half billion containers placed on the Italian market in 2014, as many as 3 billion were FSC certified or that is made of cellulose from sustainably managed forests. Here too the increase has been considerable (+ 65% compared to 2013).
