Plastics and bioplastics: a deal to improve collection
Last June 11th, in the presence of Minister of Environment Gian Luca Galletti, a two-year agreement was signed implementing a program promoted by Corepla, Conai, Assobioplastiche and the Italian Composters Consortium (CIC), to foster and enhance environmental management of biodegradable and compostable plastic packaging by reducing the amount of non-compatible materials deposited in the “composting system” and improving sludge-source compost.
The agreement stipulates that Corepla will supply a sum of 1,500,000 euro per year in order to:
- support municipal governments in programs to include biodegradable and compostable plastic packaging in sorted organic waste collection services;
- develop communication plans to promote and foster the growth of collection and treatment systems for this packaging type as a form of organic waste;
- support monitoring, research and experimentation in the organic recycling chain;
- raising awareness among citizens, institutions and enterprises of better biodegradable and compostable plastic packaging management (in order to foster sustainable resource consumption and waste prevention and increase quality sorted collection);
- implement university research by establishing and funding specific projects.
