Constantia Flexibles’ new Indian plant to produce solely sustainable packaging
Constantia Flexible, the world’s third largest producer of flexible packaging with headquarters in Vienna, Austria, recently opened a new factory in Gujarat, India.
According to the company, this is the world’s first plant designed to produce exclusively sustainable and recyclable packaging.
Constantia Ecoflex Ahmedabad (plant area of 24,500 sq.m) will produce environmentally friendly packaging under the EcoLam brand (part of the innovative product line Ecolutions), consisting of a lightweight Mono-PE laminate suitable for a wide range of packaging applications.
Due to its mono-material structure it is fully recyclable, and its carbon footprint is approximately 32% lower than that of comparable products. The EcoLam family also comes in three different barrier grades (EcoLam, EcoLamPlus, EcoLamHighPlus).
The decision to open a plant in India was mainly dictated by the plastic waste management rules issued by the Indian government in 2016, which include scrapping single-use plastic like pouches completely by the year 2022 and phasing out multi-layered plastic, which is non-recyclable.
Constantia Ecoflex Ahmedabad currently employs 50 people, a figure that is expected to triple by the second quarter of 2020.
