Nissin Food switches to bio-plastic
Nissin Food Products, Japan’s leading instant noodle company, is planning to redesign the containers of its flagship Cup Noodle brand to reduce the use of petroleum-based products.
The packaging will be made from bio-based PE, a material derived from sugar cane that will replace 50% of petroleum-based components currently in use.
Nissin says that when the new cups are incinerated they release about 16% less CO2 than the current versions.
The company will begin phasing in the new material in December and hopes to complete the switch by the end of March 2022.
It is also planning to extend the use of bio-plastic to other products made in its factories abroad.
