Glass recycling in the EU: reaching 70%
Almost all of the scrap glass is used as a secondary raw material in an efficient "bottle to bottle" circuit. Italy fourth in Europe.
According to the latest data on glass recycling released by the European Federation of Glass containers (FEVE), the average rate registered in the European Union for 2011, for the first time, exceeds the 70% threshold.
Italy remains fourth in the "European ranking", after Germany, France and England: But if our country aboveall improved in the overall quality of segregated collection, the country would not be compelled to import glass scrap.
Glass recycling (European data 2011) leads to:
- savings of more than 12 million tons of raw materials (sand, soda ash, calcium carbonate);
- a reduction of over 7 million tons of CO2, equivalent to 4 million cars on the road;
- a savings of 2.5% of energy for every 10% of recycled glass in the furnace.
