Wax paper is compostable: the evidence
Wax paper packaging is compostable at the industrial scale, as demonstrated by the strict EN 13432 regulation testing on packaging that can be recovered through composting and biodegradation.
This is according to a recent in-depth study, commissioned by the European wax paper packaging materials association (EuroWaxPack) and carried out at the independent Belgian laboratory OWS.
The analyses conducted on this very common paraffin-coated wrapping and folding paper documented its biodegradation after 75 days, disintegration after 12 weeks, and the material’s composting properties. It has therefore been concluded that the wax paper in question is effectively and completely compostable and, thus, a suitable candidate for certifications like OK Compost and Compostale.
The properties ascertained, moreover, enable its use, with all performances guaranteed, in packaging for confectionery products like candies, chocolate and chewing gum. These results were added to previous studies carried out by single concerns belonging to EuroWaxPack, on the use of wax paper for packaging cheeses and meat.
