BEHIND THE COVER April 2019
Maria Credidio was born in Terranova da Sibari (CS) in 1957, but lives and works in S. Demetrio Corone (CS). Alongside her work as an artist, she is a cultural operator; since 2001 she has been president of the Magna Grecia Biennale of Contemporary Art of S. Demetrio Corone.

Fragile equilibriums
Both geometry, presented in pure forms, and writing constitute two nuclei of absolute importance in the experiment work of Credidio, as also emerges from her creation entitled “Fragile equilibriums”, made specifically for the cover of the April edition of the magazine ItaliaImballaggio.
The artist has achieved a precise stylistic approach proposing works in which, all merely decorative elements are eliminated, and the color choices tuned down in favor of the use of black and white, where essential, geometric, primitive forms such as triangles, spheres and cylinders predominate in the basic dictate of order and formal composure.
The artist is true to the maxim enunciated by Paul Cézanne to “treat nature according to the cylinder, the sphere and the cone”: both the sculptures and the paintings of Credidio are in fact intimately traversed by a geometric logic that animates the surfaces and gives life to the sculptural bodies.
Her installations are part of the riverbed of a language devoted to elegance and marked by refinement, formal values pursued by abolishing any motif that might appear an unnecessary add-on: in Fragile equilibriums, what is more, the artist uses an empty packaging tube, used to bear a material as delicate and fragile as, and resorts to the shape of the sphere, whose surface Maurits Cornelis Escher saw an “infinite plane”.

After having completed her artistic studies with excellent results, Credidio, a multi-faceted artist dedicated to forging new fields, has since the early eighties carried out artistic experimentation, participating in exhibitions and artistic events in Italy and Europe.
Among her decades long activity, we cite in 2001 her installation Kites from Kabul to New York to the 34th street in Manhattan, enacted immediately after the tragedy of September 11th, as part of the Peace project.
Her 20111 selection for the 54th Venice Biennale, curated by Vittorio Sgarbi. The exhibition, curated by Boris Brollo, entitled Maria Credidio held in 2018. Abitare l’illimite - Live the unlimited, timely recognition of her recent work, at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MACA) in Acri (CS). She has given lessons in painting and ceramics to Cambridge and Harvard University students. Some of her works can be found in the permanent collections of important public and private institutions.
