More visible on the shelf, thanks to the pack

For the US distribution chain Fairway Market (active in the area of New York, 20 stores, 810 million dollars in sales), the Group Pedon has developed a line of speedy cooking, high health-content “grains and seeds”, capable of combining modern lifestyles with easy, speedy preparation. Its innovation as a product line lies in its combining practicality with high nutritional content, grains with “super foods” (see box).

Focusing on the completeness of the offer as well as to better shelf recognition, Pedon has also developed the line from the point of view of the packaging, with a particular care for the graphics, the packaging (assisted by its trusted supplier, Sacchettificio di Rosà) and displays at point of sale. For the stand-up bags, Pedon opted for a 3 ply (PE + PET + PP) laminate packed in a modified atmosphere, which ensures a shelf life of 19 months. The film is printed in 5 colors for all the references, the task of guiding the choice of the consumer with specific information about each product being assigned to the large adhesive labels, printed in 13 specific color codes.
A choice of production optimization, this, that has enabled Pedon to obtain important economies of scale, even when the delivery of only a limited amount of product is involved.

Note about super food
In addition to “grains” (quick-cooking cereals and legumes ready in 10 minutes, pre-cooked, of course, that do not require soaking, are rich in fiber and protein but low in fat) “super foods” are also gaining hold in Italy. The term indicates products/foods with more pronounced nutritional characteristics and, in some cases, totally unique compared to traditional foods. For example Quinoa contains all 9 essential amino acids necessary for the functioning of the organism (histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine and tryptophan), presenting an overall good balance of protein and carbohydrates. Its protein content is higher than that of rice, millet and corn. It also does not contain gluten and is therefore suitable for people with food intolerances. What is surprising in Chia in turn is its especially high calcium content (equivalent to 600 mg per serving of 100 g, 5 times higher than that of milk) and the particularly balanced presence of essential fatty acids omega 3 and omega-6. Amaranth, another gluten-free cereal, is rich in proteins (in particular it contains the amino acid lysine, lacking in most cereals), and minerals such as iron, calcium, magnesium and phosphorus. Additionally, it contains a lot of fiber, is very digestible and is easily metabolized by the body. Thanks to all of these properties, it is a foodstuff particularly recommended for children, pregnant women and the elderly.
