Just Eat to introduce green packaging in Italy in May

Food delivery company Just Eat has announced that from May onwards it will use biodegradable and recyclable bags and boxes in Italy.

Three main materials have been chosen for the new packaging: cellulose pulp, natural grass paper and sugar cane residues.

Bags for “piadine” (flatbreads), sandwiches and kebabs will be made of grass paper, consisting of 50% grass and 50% FSC certified paper. Boxes and containers for hot and cold food will be made from sugarcane bagasse, a plastic-free material with low environmental impact deriving from the cane sugar production process. Boxes for fried food, hamburgers, French fries, salads, poke and soups are made from 100% sugar cane fibre and are certified food safe.

They are produced without the use of bleaching agents or chemicals and are biodegradable and compostable within 1-2 weeks. The entire production process is also environmentally friendly and uses 13.5% less energy, 8.4% less steam and 9.3% less water than the production of traditional white cardboard.

Just Eat has been operating in Italy since 2011 in more than 1,100 municipalities and has around 13,500 partner restaurants.
